Rapper Yak Gotti, whose real name is Deamonte Kendrick, was stabbed while incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia. The incident occurred on Sunday, as confirmed by authorities and his legal representative.
Yak Gotti, known for his affiliation with fellow rapper Young Thug, is one of the two remaining co-defendants in a high-profile racketeering trial that has captured national attention. The trial, which began in 2022, involves charges of gang activity, murder, drug trafficking, and gun violations. Both Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell, the other co-defendant, have been awaiting a verdict as jurors continue deliberations.
According to Natalie Ammons, the communications director for the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, "Kendrick received treatment for minor injuries from a sharp object." The altercation took place at the jail's south annex in Union City, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Doug Weinstein, Kendrick's attorney, provided an update on his client's condition via social media, stating, "I spoke to Deamonte last night, and while he sounded tired, I expect him to make a full recovery." He further expressed hope to see Kendrick in court soon, urging the public to keep him in their prayers.
The case against Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, and his alleged street gang, YSL (Young Slime Life), represents the longest criminal trial in Georgia's history. Prosecutors allege that YSL is a violent street gang, while the defense argues it is merely a record label known as Young Stoner Life.
As the trial progresses, the use of rap lyrics as evidence has been a contentious issue, with several defendants, including Young Thug, having already accepted plea deals. However, both Kendrick and Stillwell have rejected such offers, choosing instead to face the jury's decision.
