The Lagos State Government has once again shut down Quilox Restaurant Bar Night Club, owned by nightlife entrepreneur and politician Shina Peller, due to environmental infractions.
The closure was announced by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) through a statement released on its X handle.
According to LASEPA's General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the agency decided to take this action after several warnings were ignored by the establishment.
Dr. Ajayi emphasized that "the Agency will not hesitate to take necessary actions against any establishment that fails to comply with environmental regulations," urging all businesses to be responsible for their environmental impact and collaborate with the state government to create a sustainable future for Lagos residents.
The shutdown of Quilox has sparked a variety of reactions from the public. Some individuals view the government's action as a targeted witch hunt against Shina Peller, who is also a politician.
For instance, one commenter labeled the move as a "witch hunt," while another suggested that the government is attempting to "kill all Ibo business." These comments reflect a sentiment among some that the enforcement actions may be politically or ethnically motivated.
Conversely, others support the government's decision but propose alternative measures. One commenter argued that instead of outright lockdowns, the government should impose "heavy fines" on establishments that violate environmental regulations.
This perspective suggests a preference for punitive financial measures over business closures, which could mitigate economic disruptions while still enforcing compliance.
