Protest: We will step in If Looting, Destruction Continue - CDS Musa

Amid the ongoing nationwide #EndbadGovernance protests in Nigeria, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has issued a stern warning that the military will intervene if the demonstrations continue to escalate violently.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on August 2nd, 2024, Musa condemned the widespread vandalism and looting that have marred the protests, particularly highlighting incidents in Kano where parts of the newly built Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park were set ablaze.

The protests, which have been dubbed '10 Days of Rage,' have seen significant unrest in various states including Yobe, Lagos, Borno, Gombe, and Abuja, resulting in at least 14 reported deaths.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reported that five people were killed during the protests on Thursday, with Amnesty International claiming that security personnel were responsible for 13 deaths across different states.

Musa emphasized that the destruction of properties is counterproductive and urged protesters to refrain from such actions.

He commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain order but reiterated that the military would step in if necessary. "We will take professional action against those exploiting the protest," Musa stated, adding that anyone caught would face legal consequences.

The CDS also appealed to the media to reduce coverage of the protests, suggesting that some participants are seeking attention. He called for patience from Nigerians, assuring them that the government is taking steps to alleviate economic hardships.
