Esther

A devastating flood has struck the University of Ibadan, causing major damage to student hostels and resulting in the destruction of property worth millions of naira.

The flood primarily affected Obafemi Awolowo Hall, with Blocks A, B, and C being the most impacted. Approximately 16 rooms on the underground floor were completely submerged, leaving students' belongings such as documents, books, foodstuffs, laptops, and other valuables floating in the water.

The Students’ Union (SU) at the university quickly responded to the crisis. In a statement jointly signed by its President, Bolaji Aweda, and Public Relations Officer, Olumide Omotayo, the SU confirmed the incident and reported it to the university management.

The management has tasked the Works and Maintenance Department and the University Student Lodgings Bureau (USLB) with addressing the issue. These departments are set to inspect the situation and work towards a lasting solution.

In the meantime, the hall management has approved the temporary relocation of affected students to other rooms and blocks. The SU emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal and maintaining clear drainage pipes to prevent future occurrences. They reassured the residents that efforts are underway to resolve the matter and expressed appreciation for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time.
