South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law, marking the first such declaration in the country since 1980.
This announcement was made during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, December 3, via YTN television.
President Yoon justified this drastic measure by emphasizing the need to protect South Korea's "free and constitutional order." He accused domestic political opponents of being "shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces" that threaten the nation's stability.
Despite not citing any direct threat from North Korea, Yoon stated, "I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people."
