Police Refute Claims of Instructing Nigerians to Beat, Stone Officers Searching Their Phones

The Nigerian Police Force has categorically denied allegations that it instructed citizens to "beat" or "stone" officers who are found searching their phones. This statement comes in response to widespread rumors and misinformation circulating on social media platforms, which have sparked significant public concern and debate.

The controversy began when several posts emerged online, claiming that the police had issued a directive allowing Nigerians to physically confront officers engaged in unauthorized phone searches. These claims quickly gained traction, leading to confusion and fear among the populace about the legality and safety of such actions.

In an official statement released on December 23, 2024, the Nigerian Police Force clarified its position, emphasizing that no such directive had been issued. The statement read: "The Nigerian Police Force wishes to inform the general public that at no time did it authorize or encourage any form of violence against its officers. The purported directive circulating on social media is false and should be disregarded."

The police further explained that while unauthorized phone searches by officers are not condoned, there are established legal channels through which citizens can report and address such misconduct. "We urge members of the public to report any instances of unlawful conduct by police officers to the appropriate authorities. Violence is never the solution and only serves to escalate tensions," the statement continued.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in managing public perception and trust, particularly in the digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly. The police reiterated their commitment to upholding the rights of citizens while maintaining law and order, and they encouraged the public to remain calm and cooperative.

In light of these events, several human rights organizations have called for increased transparency and accountability within the police force. They argue that clear guidelines and communication are essential to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that both officers and citizens are aware of their rights and responsibilities.

The Nigerian Police Force has also announced plans to enhance its community engagement efforts, aiming to build stronger relationships with the public and foster mutual understanding. By working closely with community leaders and stakeholders, the police hope to address concerns and improve the overall effectiveness of law enforcement.
