Police, LG Chairmen Disagrees Over Reported Killing of 37 in Recent Benue Attack

The recent attack in the Logo and Katsina-Ala local government areas of Benue State, Nigeria, has led to conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties. According to report, there is massive confusion over the exact number of residents killed during this violent incident.

Local government chairmen have reported that "no fewer than 30 people were killed" across various communities in these areas by suspected armed herdsmen.

Specifically, Clement Kav, the Chairman of Logo LGA, stated that "the attackers claimed ownership of Tombo land," where they "killed 17 persons and injured 37." Meanwhile, Justine Shaku, the Chairman of Kastina-Ala LGA, confirmed that the gunmen caused extensive damage and loss of life in his jurisdiction.

In contrast, the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, provided a hugely lower casualty figure, stating that "only five bodies were recovered" from the Logo attack. This discrepancy between the police and local officials' reports highlights the challenges in obtaining accurate information in such volatile situations.
