A small plane carrying ten individuals crashed into the bustling center of Gramado, a renowned tourist city in southern Brazil. The crash occurred on Sunday, leaving no survivors, according to civil defense officials.
The ill-fated aircraft, which had taken off from Canela's regional airport, was en route to Florianopolis, another popular tourist destination during the festive season. However, it met with disaster shortly after takeoff. "Unfortunately, initial reports indicate that the aircraft's occupants did not survive," stated Governor Eduardo Leite in a post on social media platform X.
Eyewitnesses reported that the plane struck a building's chimney, collided with the second floor of a house, and ultimately crashed into a furniture store. The impact scattered debris across the street, reaching a nearby inn. Unverified footage shared by local news outlets depicted burning wreckage, adding to the horror of the scene.
Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the Interior Police Department of the Rio Grande do Sul state civil police, confirmed the grim outcome, saying, "There are nine deaths confirmed by the civil defense, and there are no survivors of the plane."
Gramado, known for its German-inspired architecture and picturesque mountainous scenery, is a favored destination for tourists, especially during the Christmas season. The crash has cast a pall over the city, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
