The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong call to the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to reject President Bola Tinubu's proposed 2025 budget.
The party has criticized the budget as being detrimental to the Nigerian populace, warning that its implementation could exacerbate existing national challenges such as insecurity, poverty, and hopelessness.
In a statement released on Wednesday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba described President Tinubu's budget address as "campaign rhetoric laced with unsubstantiated economic statistics."
Ologunagba argued that the budget lacks meaningful provisions for the "real drivers of the national economy" and fails to address critical issues like job creation, economic recovery, and improved living standards.
"The budget made no meaningful provisions for real drivers of the national economy," Ologunagba stated. He further criticized the budget for not including strategic measures to reduce the cost of essential goods and services, which directly impact the wellbeing of Nigerians.
"President Tinubu dashed the hope of millions of suffering Nigerians who expected him to use the 2025 budget to make strategic provisions that will lead to the reduction in the cost of fuel, food items, electricity tariff, and other essential goods and services."
The PDP has called on the National Assembly to exercise its legislative powers under Sections 80, 81, and 82 of the 1999 Constitution to amend the budget.
The party insists that the budget should include provisions critical to economic growth and the welfare of Nigerians.
