Pastor Nick Neves of First Family Church in Antioch, California, on Thanksgiving morning demonstrated remarkable courage and skill when he confronted an axe-wielding burglar.
The incident unfolded after an alarm alerted Neves to a break-in at the church. Upon arrival, he discovered a smashed window and a door left ajar. As the intruder attempted to flee with stolen goods, Neves, who has a background in mixed martial arts, including jiu-jitsu and kickboxing, intervened.
Neves recounted to NBC News, "I shouted at him to stop, and that the police were on their way." Despite the suspect's attempts to escape, Neves managed to subdue him using his martial arts training, effectively placing the man under citizen's arrest until police arrived.
The Antioch Police Department later confirmed that the suspect had used an axe to gain entry into the church, causing several thousand dollars in damage.
Reflecting on the encounter, Neves expressed no animosity towards the burglar, hoping instead that the experience would lead to a change of heart. "Hopefully, he'll have to sit and think about this, and it'll change his heart and mind," Neves told CNN. The suspect remains in custody, facing multiple charges, including burglary, robbery, and battery.
