The City of Harare in Zimbabwe has issued a stern warning to its residents regarding dog ownership.
According to the Harare Dog and Licensing Control By-Laws, owning more than two dogs on properties smaller than 2,000 square meters is illegal.
For larger properties, the limit is set at four dogs. Violating these regulations could result in severe penalties, including fines or imprisonment for up to six months.
Acting chamber secretary Mr. Warren Chiwawa emphasized the importance of these by-laws, stating that they are designed to "promote public safety and address issues related to stray and uncontrolled dogs."
He warned that non-compliance would attract serious consequences, including a level three fine or imprisonment.
The regulations also require all dog owners to secure permits and ensure their properties are gated to prevent dogs from straying.
Additionally, breeding dogs within city limits is strictly prohibited, and allowing dogs to roam beyond property boundaries is forbidden.
