A children's funfair in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Nigeria, ended in disaster as a stampede claimed the lives of several children.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Islamic High School in Basorun, where thousands had gathered for the event organized by the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation (WINGS), led by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the arrest of the event organizers, stating that they are currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the cause of the stampede. "Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of an event organized for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue has led to multiple loss of lives and injuries," Makinde announced via his official X handle.
The governor expressed deep sympathy for the affected families, saying, "This is a very sad day for us here in Oyo State. We sympathize with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths." Security forces were deployed to restore order at the venue, and medical personnel provided immediate assistance to the injured.
The event, which was expected to host up to 5,000 children, was abruptly halted, and attendees were escorted out of the premises. Local media reported that the funfair promised exciting prizes such as scholarships and other gifts, drawing a large crowd of young participants. However, the joyous occasion quickly turned into chaos, leading to the tragic loss of life.
Governor Makinde assured the public that those responsible for the disaster would face appropriate consequences. "I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable.
Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident," he stated.
The Nigerian national emergency services have also been involved, deploying teams to assist the victims and their families. Parents have been urged to visit local hospitals to check for missing children.
As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of young lives, and authorities work diligently to prevent such tragedies in the future. "Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace," Governor Makinde concluded.
