Opposition candidate John Mahama has emerged victorious in Ghana's presidential election.
Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat, acknowledging the change in leadership despite the absence of official results from the Electoral Commission.
The election took place against the backdrop of Ghana's most severe economic crisis in decades, characterized by soaring inflation, high unemployment rates, and mounting national debt.
"The people have voted for change," Bawumia stated, as he accepted the outcome based on internal tallies from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which indicated a decisive win for Mahama.
Celebrations erupted across the nation as Mahama's supporters took to the streets, expressing hope for a brighter economic future.
Salifu Abdul-Fatawu, a resident of Kumasi, shared his excitement with the BBC, saying, "I'm so excited for this victory. I hope it means that my sibling and I will get jobs, and the price of food and fuel will come down."
Despite the overall peaceful nature of the election, there were isolated incidents of violence.
Two individuals were reportedly shot dead during an election dispute in Nyankpala, and the electoral commission office in Damongo was destroyed by angry supporters frustrated with delays in result announcements.
Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, campaigned on promises to transform Ghana into a "24-hour economy," aiming to revitalize the nation's economic landscape. His victory marks a comeback after losing the 2020 election to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who steps down after completing two terms.
The US embassy in Accra congratulated Ghana on conducting a successful election, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability. The Electoral Commission has urged patience, noting it has up to 72 days to officially declare the results.
John Mahama is set to be inaugurated on January 7, 2025, with expectations high for addressing Ghana's economic challenges and implementing transformative policies to foster growth and stability.
