The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly distanced itself from a recent declaration of Biafra independence made in Finland. IPOB described this event as a "shambolic scam" and a "charade," emphasizing that only the original declaration by the late Odimegwu Ojukwu in 1967 holds legitimacy.
Emma Powerful, IPOB's spokesperson, issued a statement underlining that the organization is committed to restoring the sovereignty of Biafra as declared by Ojukwu, which was forcibly surrendered due to genocide perpetrated by Nigerian and British forces.
The statement further clarified that IPOB seeks a United Nations-supervised referendum for Biafrans to determine their political future, rejecting any attempts to declare Biafra anew.
The group criticized those involved in the Finnish declaration, labeling them as infiltrators and agents provocateurs whose actions aim to destabilize the Southeast region of Nigeria and undermine the genuine struggle for Biafra's independence.
IPOB commended media outlets that ignored the Finnish declaration, viewing it as an attempt to mock the Biafra struggle. The organization reiterated its commitment to peaceful advocacy for Biafra's restoration and warned that those obstructing this effort would face consequences, not from IPOB, but from the legacy of Biafra's fallen heroes.
