Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and a prominent activist, has made bold allegations against influential figures within Nigeria's legal and political spheres.
Sowore claims there is a concerted effort to unjustly imprison human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, who is currently embroiled in a defamation case with Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
According to Sowore, this alleged conspiracy involves high-ranking officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as well as judges and politically exposed lawyers.
He asserts that these individuals are working together to ensure Farotimi remains behind bars, following his arrest on December 3, 2024, for purported defamation in his book titled 'Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.'
In a statement released on his social media platform, Sowore expressed his determination to fight for justice, stating, "This was the plan from the onset.
It involves a conspiracy between powerful judicial caricatures, the @policeng, led by IGP Kayode Egbetokun, judges, and so-called influential politically exposed lawyers.
The goal is to abandon @DeleFarotimi in a prison controlled by them with the help of a kangaroo magistrate court, essentially fighting him while his hands are tied behind his back."
The controversy intensified when Afe Babalola’s law firm, through partner Ola Faro, petitioned the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee to have Farotimi disbarred.
This move has been met with criticism from various quarters, including Atiku Abubakar, who described Farotimi's detention under a non-existent law as troubling.
Despite the challenges, Sowore remains resolute, vowing that "the fight will not end until justice is done." Farotimi's bail application has been adjourned until December 20, 2024, leaving him remanded in prison in the interim.
