Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has initiated efforts to recover over 200 government vehicles that have gone missing under the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. The governor has established a 12-member committee tasked with the recovery of these assets.
The committee's chairman, Kelly Okungbowa, revealed to newsmen in Benin City that within 24 hours of their inauguration, they successfully recovered three vehicles—a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses—from a private residence.
Okungbowa also disclosed that some palliatives, including bags of garri and rice, were found in one of the recovered Toyota Hiace buses. He emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging citizens to provide information about the whereabouts of the missing vehicles, with assurances of rewards for whistleblowers. "This is not private property but the property of Edo citizens," he stated, highlighting the urgency of reclaiming these assets.
The committee's swift action signifies the new administration's commitment to transparency and accountability. As Okungbowa noted, "We assure the Edo people and the State Government that we are going to do the job to the best of our ability."
The operation has so far faced no resistance, thanks to the support of security agencies. The committee continues to seek further information as they expand their search to other locations where government vehicles are reportedly parked.
