Obasanjo Calls for Major Electoral Reform After Criticizing INEC's Handling of Past Elections

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo reignited discussions on the need for comprehensive electoral reform in Nigeria.

Obasanjo criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its handling of past elections and called for significant changes to restore public trust in the electoral process.

Obasanjo specifically targeted INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, advocating for his dismissal along with other officials. He emphasized the importance of appointing "dispassionate, non-partisan actors with impeccable reputations" through a rigorous vetting process to lead the commission.

This, he argued, is crucial for ensuring that future elections are free from political influence and corruption.

The former president highlighted INEC's failure to implement key technologies during the 2023 elections, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the Election Result Viewing Portal.

"These technologies were touted by the INEC chairman himself," Obasanjo noted, adding that their non-use led to "widespread voting irregularities."

Obasanjo's remarks have sparked a mixed response. While some support his call for reform, others, including the Presidency, have accused him of hypocrisy.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, criticized Obasanjo, stating, "It is hypocrisy writ large when a man who presided over the worst election in Nigeria demands the sack of the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission."
