OAU Implements Waivers for Extra-Year Students After Suicide Scandal

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced plans to offer waivers to students who have extended their studies beyond the usual duration.

This decision follows a tragic incident where a 200-level student attempted suicide due to overwhelming academic challenges.

The university's management is committed to supporting students facing such difficulties, as confirmed by the Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju. "We want to minimize any possible suicide attempts due to academic stress," Olanrewaju stated.

"By offering a compassionate solution, we hope to alleviate some of the burden on students and prevent tragedies like this from occurring."

This initiative was prompted by an alarming event on October 16, when a student, who had transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education, attempted to take their own life.

In response, the university convened an urgent meeting with faculty deans to discuss measures to support students in similar situations.

The outcome of this meeting was detailed in an internal memorandum issued by the university’s Senate Division on November 1.

The memo, signed by Deputy Registrar M.S. Oluwajoba, emphasized a collaborative approach involving academic staff and advisers to create a more supportive environment for students.

The proposed waivers align with a previous university circular suggesting that students with one or two outstanding courses be allowed to graduate on compassionate grounds.

This policy aims to reduce the emotional toll on students nearing graduation but delayed by a few courses.
