NURTW Leader Koko Zaria Remanded for Assaulting Nollywood Actor Baba Lawori

Ganiyu Oyedepo, popularly known as Kokozaria, a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has been remanded in prison custody by a Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court.


The court's decision came yesterday following Oyedepo's arraignment on charges of conspiracy, assault occasioning harm, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.


The incident, which took place on June 5, 2024, at Idimu, Lagos, involved Oyedepo conspiring with his associates to assault Alhaji Ade Adele, a Nollywood actor widely known as Baba Lawori.


According to the prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, a legal officer from the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Alagbon, the assault resulted in Adele sustaining head injuries inflicted by a broken bottle.


Chief Magistrate B. Sonuga presided over the case marked B/40/2024, where Oyedepo pleaded not guilty to the charges. Despite his plea, the magistrate ordered his remand, citing the severity of the allegations. "The offences committed by the defendant contravened sections 411; 173 and 168 (l)(d) of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State," stated Animashaun.


The charges against Oyedepo are detailed as follows: “That you Ganiyu Oyedepo on or about June 25, 2024, at Idimu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, conspired to commit Felony wit: Assault Occasioning Harm and committed an Offence contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State.”


Furthermore, the charge sheet elaborates, “That you Oyedepo on the said date unlawfully procured one of your boys (now at large) who unlawfully broke a bottle and inflicted injuries on the head of one Alhaji Ade Adele and committed an Offence contrary to Section 173 of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State 2015.”
