As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th independence anniversary on October 1, 2024, a significant wave of protests is set to sweep across the country.
The protests, organized by various human rights groups and spearheaded by Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, are a direct response to the widespread devastation, hunger, insecurity, and hardship inflicted on Nigerians.
Sowore, who is also the convener of the Take it Back movement, has been vocal about the necessity of these demonstrations. He declared on social media, "NO GOING BACK! #FearlessInOctober," emphasizing the unwavering commitment of the organizers.
The protests aim to address 15 specific demands, including the removal of petrol subsidies, ending corruption, and reversing the high cost of living that has plagued the nation.
The August 2024 protests, which lasted from August 1 to 10, saw thousands of Nigerians take to the streets under the banner #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria. Despite President Bola Tinubu's call for dialogue, the protesters felt their demands were not adequately addressed.
The economic crisis in Nigeria has only worsened since then, with inflation rates soaring to 33.40 percent and food inflation exceeding 40 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The Lagos State Police Command, led by Commissioner Olanrewaju Ishola, has assured the public of maximum security during the protests. However, past demonstrations have often ended in violence and arrests. In August, hundreds were detained, some charged with treason, and many remain in custody.
Sowore's message is clear: "We dey effectively suspend dia own independence day in favour of our new request for Independence." The protests are not just a call for change but a demand for dignity and justice for all Nigerians.
