NiMet Warns of 3-Day Thunderstorms Across Nigeria, Advises Caution

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorms across various regions of Nigeria from Thursday to Saturday.



This weather outlook, released on Tuesday, highlights the potential for significant weather disturbances and urges residents to take necessary precautions.


According to NiMet, thunderstorms are expected to commence on Wednesday morning in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. Later in the day, these storms will extend to Bauchi, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, and other states.


In the North Central region, areas including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, and Benue are anticipated to experience morning thunderstorms. The southern region is also forecasted to face similar conditions later in the day.


NiMet's forecast continues with predictions for Thursday, where thunderstorms are expected over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and Kebbi States in the morning, extending to Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara States later in the day. The North Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa States, will also see thunderstorms throughout the day. In the southern region, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States are expected to be affected.


On Friday, the agency predicts thunderstorms over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States in the morning, with patches of clouds and intervals of sunshine expected later in the northern region. The North Central region will continue to experience thunderstorms, affecting Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory. The southern region will also see thunderstorms in areas such as Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.


NiMet has warned of a high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours. "Residents should avoid flood-prone areas as strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur," the agency advised. Additionally, airline operators are encouraged to obtain updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
