The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms across Nigeria from Thursday to Saturday.
According to the agency, "thundery weather conditions" are expected to impact various regions of the country, with significant implications for both urban and rural areas.
NiMet's weather outlook, released on Wednesday, provides a detailed breakdown of the anticipated weather patterns. In the northern region, morning thunderstorms are expected on Thursday, particularly affecting Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states.
As the day progresses, these storms are likely to extend to Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kebbi states. The North central region will also experience morning thunderstorms, with the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue States being affected. By the end of the day, most parts of this region are expected to see continued storm activity.
This pattern of morning and afternoon thunderstorms is projected to persist into Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the northern region will again see storms in Taraba during the morning, spreading to Kaduna, Kebbi, and Adamawa by afternoon. The North central region will follow a similar pattern, with morning storms in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa States, continuing into the evening.
The southern region, including states like Abia, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, will also face morning and evening thunderstorms.
NiMet has highlighted the potential for urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours, advising residents to avoid flood-prone areas. The agency also warns that strong winds may precede the rains, posing additional risks. Airline operators are urged to obtain updated weather reports from NiMet to ensure effective planning and safety.
