The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages and fruit juices during the festive season. This advisory comes amidst concerns over the proliferation of substandard and counterfeit drinks in the market.
In a statement released by the agency, NAFDAC's Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of vigilance among consumers. "We urge all Nigerians to be cautious about the alcoholic drinks and fruit juices they consume during the Yuletide," she stated. "Substandard juices are usually in higher supply during this period, posing significant health risks."
The agency highlighted that the fake drinks industry in Nigeria is vast, with counterfeiters producing a wide range of adulterated beverages, including wines, soft drinks, and spirits. These products often mimic popular brands but contain harmful substances that can lead to severe health issues such as liver cirrhosis, kidney failure, and even death.
NAFDAC has intensified its enforcement efforts, particularly targeting major distributors in markets like Rumuokoro Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The agency has been actively seizing prohibited products, including alcoholic beverages sold in sachets or bottles less than 200ml, following a ban announced on February 5, 2024.
Professor Adeyeye reiterated the agency's commitment to safeguarding public health through stringent regulatory measures. "We will not stand by while the lives of young Nigerians are endangered by these dangerous spirits," she affirmed.
Consumers are advised to adhere to the "4Ps" when purchasing drinks: Place, Price, Packaging, and Product. NAFDAC recommends buying from reputable sources, checking for proper packaging and pricing, and ensuring the product has a NAFDAC registration number.
As the festive season approaches, NAFDAC continues to monitor the market closely, urging Nigerians to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal production of adulterated products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
