American rapper Nicki Minaj has captured the attention of Nigerians by tweeting in Pidgin English.
The incident unfolded on September 2nd, 2024, when Nicki responded to a false tweet about her upcoming album.
The X account had falsely claimed, "Nicki Minaj confirmed 'Roman In Gag City' will be included on Pink Friday 2 deluxe." Nicki's response was both unexpected and emphatic: "I must be the only person you can make money off mentioning. Go 1 day. Abeg. GO ONE FUCKING DAY WITHOUT FKNG LYING ABEG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The use of "abeg," a common Pidgin term meaning "please," left many Nigerians in awe.
One Nigerian user, surprised by her language choice, tweeted, "Who Dey teach Nicki Minaj pidgin language." To which Nicki replied, “Wetin be the confusion? I Dey have eyes o? I can read all the pidgin weh una pikin de put on my timeline every day. SUCKS TEETH LOUDLY” This further astonished Nigerians and other users on the platform.

One user commented, "Our pidgin go soon become global language. Make Ghana and the likes no come dey claim ownership for future o.😄"
Another added, "She speaks pidgin better than me." However, some speculated that a Nigerian might be managing her social media accounts.
"She's not the one typing those tweets, I can beat my chest to it, would be someone who manages her social accounts, who probably is a Nigerian," one user asserted.
