Nigerian Man, South African Girlfriend Arrested After Selling N3.3m Worth of Drugs to Undercover Police

A 48-year-old Nigerian man and his 33-year-old South African girlfriend have been apprehended by law enforcement authorities in Lichtenburg, South Africa.

The arrest, which took place on Wednesday, December 18, was the result of a coordinated operation involving South Africa's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, in collaboration with the North West provincial drug task team and the Lichtenburg K9 unit.

The duo was caught red-handed selling drugs valued at approximately R40,000 (equivalent to N3.3 million) to undercover police officers.

The substances seized during the operation included 649 mandrax tablets, 40 packets of crystal meth, and additional quantities of CAT drugs. Following the arrest, a search of the Nigerian man's residence led to the discovery of more crystal meth and CAT drugs, with an estimated street value of R15,000 and R6,000 respectively.

Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, the provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, stated, "An undercover operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the pair soon after selling drugs."

He further revealed that the South African woman attempted to bribe the police officers in a desperate bid to secure her boyfriend’s release. "She was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption," Mathebula added.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
