Nigerian Lawmakers Vow to Boost University Autonomy Amid Rising Educational Demands

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the 10th House's commitment to prioritizing university autonomy in Nigeria.

This initiative aims to enhance academic performance and align with global standards.

Speaking at a public hearing on five bills, including one for the establishment of the Federal University of Solid Mineral Development in Michika, Adamawa, Abbas stated the importance of addressing the underperformance of existing universities.

Abbas, represented by Rep. Esosa Iyawe, stated, "The House will prioritize university autonomy as seen in other parts of the world to ensure that standards are elevated."

He acknowledged the concerns of many Nigerians regarding the creation of new universities, especially given that some current institutions are not meeting international academic benchmarks.

However, Abbas highlighted the pressing need to respond to Nigeria's growing population, which has resulted in thousands of qualified young Nigerians being unable to secure university admission due to limited capacity.

"Establishing new universities is part of our response to that growing demand and the need to expand opportunities for young Nigerians," he explained.
