Nigerian Lawmaker Under Investigation for Alleged Assault on Cab Driver

F.Adenike

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is actively investigating an alleged assault involving Stephen Abuwatseya, a cab driver, and Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from Abia State.

The altercation reportedly occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja.

According to reports, Ikwechegh allegedly threatened to make Abuwatseya "disappear" and further intimidated him with threats of physical harm and detention in a generator house.

This incident has raised significant concerns about the abuse of power by public officials in Nigeria.

The NPF has issued a statement urging the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, emphasizing that such actions undermine the values of impartiality upheld by the IGP's office.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command is currently handling the investigation following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
