Nigerian Lawmaker Seeks Redemption After Assaulting Bolt Driver

Nigerian lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized for physically assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

The altercation occurred when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh's residence in Maitama, Abuja.

A video of the incident, which went viral, shows Ikwechegh slapping and insulting the driver after he requested the lawmaker to come out and collect the delivery.

Acknowledging his misconduct, Ikwechegh stated, "As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people.

My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry." He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public.

In response to the backlash, Ikwechegh announced his intention to seek professional counselling to prevent such incidents in the future.

He also plans to engage in community service initiatives aimed at promoting respect, empathy, and understanding. "We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect," he urged.

The lawmaker confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police, pledging to support their investigation and uphold accountability.

He appreciated the swift condemnation of his actions by his party and the police, emphasizing a collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens' rights.
