The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore has publicly accused the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) of obstructing his attempts to leave Nigeria.
According to Sowore, he has been subjected to repeated harassment and abuse by the NIS, who have allegedly placed him on their watchlist.
This accusation was made in a statement posted on his X page, where he expressed frustration over being stopped at the airport. He stated, “The Nigerian Immigration Service #nigimmigration continues to subject me to unwarranted harassment and abuse. Violating my rights repeatedly.”
This incident is not isolated; it follows a previous event in September when Sowore was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos State, during which his international passport was confiscated. Known for his vocal criticism of the Nigerian government and leadership of movements like #RevolutionNow, Sowore's allegations have sparked renewed discussions about freedom of movement and potential political persecution in Nigeria.
