The Nigerian government has initiated a comprehensive investigation into Air Peace, Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), and MTN Nigeria over potential consumer rights violations.
This inquiry is being conducted by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and is set to begin on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2024.
The investigation aims to address issues related to poor service delivery and exploitative practices in the aviation, banking, and telecommunications sectors.
According to the FCCPC spokesperson, Ondaje Ijagwu, "The inquiries are intended to address issues of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential consumer rights violations."
The investigation is grounded in the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which empowers the FCCPC to investigate and resolve practices that undermine consumer rights, disrupt markets, or create unfair competition.
Air Peace is under scrutiny for allegations of "exploitative ticket pricing, including massive price hikes for advance bookings on certain domestic routes."
In the banking sector, GTB faces an inquiry due to "network failures that hinder customers from accessing their funds or using banking applications." Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria is being investigated for "persistent complaints of undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer care."
