Nigerian Federal Government has dismissed civil servants who obtained degrees from private universities in the Benin Republic and Togo since 2017.
This action was confirmed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Thursday, December 5.
The decision follows an earlier announcement in August that only eight universities in these countries were accredited to award degrees to Nigerians.
The crackdown was prompted by an investigative report revealing that a journalist had acquired a degree from a university in the Benin Republic in just two months and subsequently used it to participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
This revelation raised serious concerns about the integrity of foreign-acquired qualifications.
