Nigerian Government Denies False Apology to Libya

The Nigerian government has firmly denied reports suggesting that it apologized to Libya for the alleged mistreatment of the Super Eagles football team.

This denial comes in response to a story published by The Libya Observer, which claimed that Nigeria had issued an apology following the detention of the team at a Libyan airport.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has dismissed these claims as "a deliberate attempt to gain political leverage and mislead football administrators and fans across Africa." According to Tuggar, the report distorted the details of his phone conversation with Libya’s Eastern-based Foreign Minister, Abdelhadi Lahweej.

The incident in question occurred when the Super Eagles arrived in Libya for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Upon arrival, they were detained for over 20 hours without access to food, water, or internet. Tuggar clarified that while he did contact Lahweej to resolve the situation, there was no apology issued.

He stated, "The fact of the matter was that the CDA of the Government of National Unity was summoned to the Ministry to seek an immediate end to the unfortunate incident."
