Nigerian Cyclist Advocates for a Borderless Africa After Facing Challenges at African Borders [VIDEO]

Nigerian cyclist Udoh Ebaide Joy has called for the establishment of a borderless Africa after encountering significant challenges during her journey across the continent.

Ebaide, who is on an ambitious mission to tour all 58 African countries, shared her frustrations following a particularly difficult experience at an African border.

Speaking candidly about her ordeal, Ebaide stated, "A BORDERLESS AFRICA is the only thing that can fix this. We want A BORDERLESS AFRICA!" Her remarks highlight the ongoing difficulties faced by travelers navigating the complex and often frustrating border systems within Africa.

Ebaide recounted her experience, noting, "There is no reason why travelers keep going through hell just to cross borders. Many Africans would rather travel through other continents but Africa because they dread the madness at the borders." She emphasized the fear and apprehension many feel when considering travel within the continent, adding, "… and yes, they should be afraid, because what is this?!"

During her journey, Ebaide faced attempts at extortion and unnecessary delays, which she described as a significant burden on her travel budget. "If I had no one to call, I’d have either paid my way through, or had my time colossally wasted at that border," she explained. Despite having all necessary documentation, Ebaide was forced to pay 7,000 CFA to Togo Customs for a Laissez Passer, which she identified as the only official payment required.

Expressing her frustration, Ebaide questioned the impact of such border challenges on West African tourism. "How will West African tourism truly thrive when people are too scared to visit countries that are right beside them?!" she asked, underscoring the potential economic and cultural benefits of a more integrated continent.

Ebaide's call for a borderless Africa resonates with broader discussions on regional integration and the need to facilitate easier movement across the continent. Her experiences serve as a poignant reminder of the barriers that continue to hinder intra-African travel and the urgent need for reform.
