Nigerian Army Urges Increased Funding for Security and Soldier Welfare

The acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the urgent need for increased budgetary support to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

Speaking during a condolence visit by the Senate Committee on Army, led by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, Oluyede highlighted the critical issue of inadequate accommodation for the army's growing personnel.

The Nigerian Army has been recruiting approximately 15,000 soldiers annually, yet it struggles to provide sufficient housing for these troops.

"For instance, in the last couple of years, we’ve been recruiting about 15,000 personnel but I can tell you that not a single support has been given in terms of the accommodation," Oluyede stated.

This shortfall poses significant challenges, particularly when soldiers return to barracks as security conditions stabilize.

Oluyede's call for more resources is not just about improving living conditions; it's about ensuring the army can effectively fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

He noted, "It is important for me to reiterate that Nigeria belongs to all of us and without your support, it would be very difficult for us to secure Nigeria."
