Nigeria Seeks South Africa's Backing for G20 and BRICS Membership Bid

Nigeria has formally requested South Africa's support in its bid to secure full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).

This appeal was made by Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission held in Cape Town.

The timing of this request is significant as South Africa recently assumed the presidency of the G20, a group comprising the world's largest economies.

Additionally, South Africa plays a pivotal role in the expanded BRICS bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Collectively, these nations account for approximately 37% of global GDP, marking them as a major force in global economic growth.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized Nigeria's eagerness to engage in leadership roles under South Africa's G20 presidency.

She stated, "We are strongly committed to seeking a resolution of the crisis in Sudan. In this guise, we seek South Africa’s support to accelerate the peace process and ensure that conflicts within our region are de-escalated."

Dr. Roland Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, responded positively, saying, “We will count on Nigeria’s wise counsel as we assume this major responsibility.” He further reiterated the mutual commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral relations, emphasizing their shared responsibility to improve the quality of life for their citizens.
