Nigeria's Population to Increase by 54% as Global Numbers Near 9.6Billion by 2050

The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) has projected a significant demographic shift for Nigeria and the world at large.

According to the "2024 World Population Data Sheet," Nigeria's population is expected to surge by 54% by the year 2050.

This increase will bring Nigeria's population to an estimated 232 million, accounting for approximately 2.85% of the global population.

The report also forecasts that the current global population of over eight billion will rise to nearly 9.6 billion by 2050. These projections highlight critical demographic trends and potential challenges in healthcare and resource management.

The PRB's data sheet provides detailed insights into global, regional, and country-specific population dynamics. It notes that 10% of the world's population is aged 65 and older, while 25% is under the age of 15. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the youngest region globally, with 41% of its population aged 15 or younger.

In addition to population growth, the report underscores significant disparities in healthcare access. About 50% of the world's population lacks access to quality primary health care. Family planning usage also varies widely, with 63% of married women aged 15-49 globally using some method of family planning. However, this rate is much higher in South America (78%) compared to Northern Africa (50%) and Eastern Africa (45%).

The report's findings suggest that without substantial improvements in healthcare and family planning services, countries like Nigeria could face severe socio-economic challenges.
