Nigeria’s First Private TV Station Suspends Operations Due to Economic Strain

Desmims Independent Television (DITV), recognized as the country's first private television station, has suspended its operations. This decision, which also affects Alheri Radio, one of Northern Nigeria's oldest private radio stations, was announced over the weekend in Kaduna.

The suspension is attributed to severe economic challenges that have made it unsustainable to continue broadcasting. Idris Mustapha, the Acting General Manager and Chairman of the Management Committee, stated, "The escalating cost of power has made it impossible to operate the station effectively," highlighting the financial strain exacerbated by harsh economic conditions.

The impact of these economic pressures has been profound, with many businesses that previously utilized the station's services unable to meet their financial obligations, significantly affecting revenue generation. The management expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to its millions of viewers and listeners, assuring the public that normal transmission would resume once the financial situation improves.

This suspension marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria's broadcasting industry, leaving a noticeable void in the media space. DITV and Alheri Radio have long been staples for a loyal Hausa-speaking audience, contributing significantly to the country's broadcasting sector.
