Retired Assistant Comptroller-General of Immigration, Sunday Fagbamigbe, disclosed that the country has over 320 unmanned illegal border routes.
These porous borders are not just a national concern but pose significant risks to regional stability as they facilitate the proliferation of arms, illegal drugs, human trafficking, and the influx of substandard goods.
Fagbamigbe, speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), warned that these illegal routes "provide avenues for insecurity, proliferation of arms, and dumping of unwholesome goods in the country."
He emphasized the urgent need for the Nigerian Federal Government to bolster border security by investing in advanced technologies. "We must take seriously border management security," he stated, advocating for the use of electronic sensors, night vision scopes, drones, and artificial intelligence to enhance surveillance capabilities.
Drawing lessons from Western countries, Fagbamigbe highlighted that modern surveillance systems have proven more effective than relying solely on human personnel.
He also stressed the importance of collaboration with border communities to raise awareness and improve border management. "We must create a sense of awareness and collaboration," he urged, pointing out that community involvement is crucial for effective border oversight.
