Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed as WTO Director General

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has reappointed Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term.

This decision shows the international community's recognition of her exceptional leadership and strategic foresight.

The reappointment process, which began on October 8, 2024, was conducted under the guidance of Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council. Notably, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala stood as the sole candidate, with no additional nominations submitted by the November 8 deadline.

The WTO emphasized that the process adhered to its 'Procedures for the Appointment of Directors-General' (WT/L/509), ensuring transparency and openness.

During a special General Council meeting held on November 28-29, 2024, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala presented her forward-looking vision for the WTO, followed by a Q&A session with members. Her reappointment was formally endorsed by consensus, reflecting broad support for her continued leadership.

The General Council commended Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for her outstanding contributions during her first term, particularly in navigating significant global economic challenges. Her leadership was pivotal in achieving meaningful outcomes at the 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences, where major milestones were reached.

As the first woman and African to lead the WTO, she initially assumed office on March 1, 2021, and her first term is set to conclude on August 31, 2025. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed her gratitude, stating, "I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me to continue leading this vital organization."
