New York Doctor Faces Lawsuit for Mailing Abortion Pills to Texas

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Margaret Carpenter, a New York-based physician.

The lawsuit accuses Carpenter of mailing abortion pills to a 20-year-old woman in Texas, challenging the state's stringent abortion laws.

Texas is known for having some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the United States. These laws prohibit the distribution of abortion-inducing drugs via courier, delivery, or mail service.

Additionally, they require that any physician treating patients or prescribing medication to Texas residents through telehealth services must hold a valid Texas medical license. Dr. Carpenter, who is not licensed in Texas, allegedly violated these regulations by providing the pills.

The lawsuit, filed on December 13, seeks an injunction to prevent Carpenter from practicing medicine illegally in Texas and from prescribing abortion pills to its residents.

Furthermore, Paxton is pursuing a $100,000 fine for each violation. "In Texas, we treasure the health and lives of mothers and babies," Paxton stated, emphasizing the state's commitment to enforcing its abortion laws.

Democratic-controlled New York has enacted a shield law that offers legal protection to doctors like Carpenter, who provide abortion pills to women in states where the procedure is banned.
