"Never, This Was My Only Option" - Amorim Clears Air on Replcing Guardiola at Man City

The newly appointed manager of Manchester United, Rúben Amorim has decisively addressed rumors linking him to a potential managerial role at Manchester City.

These speculations emerged amid uncertainties surrounding Pep Guardiola's future at City. However, Amorim has categorically dismissed any notion of replacing Guardiola, emphasizing that his sole focus was on the opportunity presented by Manchester United.

Amorim, who has gained recognition as one of Europe's most promising coaches due to his transformative work with Sporting Lisbon, was swiftly appointed by Manchester United following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag in late October.

Despite being linked to Manchester City during this period of uncertainty, Amorim has made it clear that he never engaged in discussions with City about succeeding Guardiola. "Never. Never had and this was my only option," Amorim stated, underlining his commitment to United.

The connection between Amorim and City was further fueled by the impending move of Sporting's director of football, Hugo Viana, to a similar role at the Etihad Stadium next summer. Nevertheless, Amorim insists that his ambition was always centered on the Old Trafford post.

He expressed confidence in his decision, stating, "When Manchester United talked to me, I had no doubts because I had already something in my mind (that) it could be a possibility."

Guardiola, meanwhile, put an end to the speculation regarding his future by signing a contract extension with Manchester City until 2027. This move came shortly after Amorim's arrival in Manchester, solidifying Guardiola's position at the club.

As Amorim prepares for his first Manchester derby against Guardiola's City, he remains focused on addressing the challenges facing his own team. Despite City's recent struggles, having won just one of their last ten matches across all competitions, Amorim is not underestimating the reigning Premier League champions.

"I never think about these things. We will face a great opponent and I’m more focused on our problems," Amorim remarked, highlighting his determination to improve United's performance.

United, currently positioned 13th in the Premier League table, have experienced a mixed start under Amorim's leadership, with three wins, one draw, and two losses in his first six games. As he navigates the complexities of managing a top-tier club, Amorim is committed to focusing on his team's development and strategy. "We have a lot of issues here. I’m more focused on what we should do on Sunday to win the game. I’m really focused on my team," he emphasized.

Despite the challenges both Manchester clubs are facing this season, Amorim is optimistic about the future. He acknowledges the importance of the Manchester derby but views it as an opportunity to further enhance his team's capabilities.

"It should be like two great teams fighting for the title, and it is not that in this moment. So it is just one more game with a very good opponent," Amorim noted, expressing his long-term vision for United.
