The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against international drug trafficking.
On Sunday, November 3, NDLEA operatives intercepted a massive haul of cocaine worth N4.4 billion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The drugs, weighing 18.72 kilograms, were cleverly concealed in the lavatories of an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft and discovered during routine post-landing cleaning.
Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters, explained, "The illicit drug consignments were wrapped in nine polythene bags and hidden in the waste collectors in the two rear lavatories of the aircraft."
This operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle a drug syndicate operating between Brazil, Ethiopia, and Nigeria.
In connection with this seizure, the NDLEA has interrogated 30 suspects.
Investigations revealed that the drugs were initially ingested and excreted in Addis Ababa by couriers before being smuggled into Nigeria.
The agency's collaboration with airline authorities and other airport stakeholders was crucial in thwarting this smuggling attempt.
Additionally, the NDLEA disrupted attempts to export cocaine, cannabis, and tramadol concealed in body cream containers and artwork to countries such as Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
These operations indicates the NDLEA's commitment to combating drug trafficking and safeguarding national security.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, commended the officers involved, stating, "Our operatives have shown exceptional vigilance and dedication in these operations, which are vital in our ongoing battle against drug trafficking networks."
