The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is poised to unveil a new tariff plan for the telecommunications sector on December 13.
This initiative aims to simplify existing tariff structures and enhance the consumer experience across Nigeria's telecom industry.
During a recent media session in Abuja, Dr. Maida Wada, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, announced the upcoming changes.
Represented by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Wada explained that the new tariff plan is part of ongoing efforts to streamline telecom services. "As of December 13, a new tariff plan will be announced. We have engaged stakeholders to contribute inputs," he stated.
The NCC has directed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to a maximum of seven.
This directive is designed to reduce complexity, ensure transparency, and protect consumer interests while promoting fair competition.
Dr. Wada emphasized, "With this measure, telecom consumers will experience relief, and misconceptions about the use of data and airtime will be minimized."
Addressing widespread concerns about data depletion, Dr. Wada noted that an audit revealed significant consumer misunderstandings regarding data usage. "What consumers must understand is that data usage differs across Android devices. The commission has embarked on public awareness to help consumers better understand data consumption," he added.
Furthermore, the NCC has mandated all licensed telecom operators to update their contact details by January 9, 2025, in compliance with the Licensing Regulations 2019.
Non-compliance could result in penalties, including fines, license suspension, or revocation. Mr. Muoka highlighted that this directive aligns with the NCC’s efforts to enhance regulatory processes and strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
