The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced a comprehensive nationwide awareness campaign.
This initiative aims to educate both travelers and airlines about their respective rights and obligations, thereby fostering a more harmonious relationship between the two parties.
During a press briefing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja, NCAA Director General Chris Najomo emphasized the importance of this campaign.
"This awareness campaign is to let passengers know their rights and obligations, and to ensure airlines uphold their duties," Najomo stated. He clarified that the goal is not to favor either passengers or airlines but to ensure fair treatment for both.
Najomo highlighted common issues such as flight delays, noting that airlines are required to provide snacks and refreshments after a two-hour delay.
Furthermore, passengers are entitled to refunds, which should be processed either in cash or online within two weeks. For delays extending beyond four hours, airlines must offer hotel accommodations for overnight stays.
Najomo urged airlines to communicate potential delays promptly through SMS or other channels, allowing passengers to adjust their plans accordingly. "No airline wants to delay a flight intentionally. There are often external factors, but timely communication can reduce frustration," he remarked.
The campaign, which has already commenced at major airports like Port Harcourt, is set to expand nationwide.
