Hackers have taken control of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website.
The NBS confirmed this development on Wednesday through a post on X, cautioning the public against trusting any information currently displayed on their site.
"This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it.
Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you," the agency announced.
The hacking incident occurred shortly after the NBS released its comprehensive crime experience and security perception survey report.
According to the report, Nigerians paid an alarming N2.23 trillion in ransom over the past year, from May 2023 to April 2024.
The survey further revealed that there were approximately 51.89 million crime incidents reported across Nigerian households during this period.
The north-west region was identified as having the highest number of crime incidents, estimated at over 14 million, while the south-east recorded the least with over six million cases.
Notably, crime rates in rural areas (26,526,069 incidents) surpassed those in urban areas (25,360,963 incidents).
This cyberattack not only disrupts the dissemination of crucial statistical data but also highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Nigeria.
The NBS had recently published reports on Nigeria's electricity exports and encountered controversy when the Body of Benchers dismissed its corruption rating of the judiciary.
