Tensions are escalating across Nigeria as Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), responds to a police summons today, August 29, 2024.
The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and other states are on high alert as the NLC mobilizes for a nationwide solidarity action in support of their leader.
The police had initially summoned Ajaero on August 20, 2024, over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. However, Ajaero, through his lawyer Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, requested a postponement to August 29 due to prior commitments.
This police action follows a controversial night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja, aimed at uncovering seditious materials linked to the recent #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
The NLC has vehemently denied these allegations, calling them "trumped-up charges."
In a circular issued by NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the organization directed its affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members for a show of solidarity. "We call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity," the circular read.
Members in Abuja were instructed to assemble at the NLC National Headquarters by 8 am to accompany Ajaero to the police station.
Political figures and organizations have also weighed in on the situation.
Peter Obi, a prominent political leader, urged the Federal Government to handle the issue with "extreme caution." Meanwhile, Ugochinyere, another political figure, criticized the police's focus, stating, "High food prices are the real terror."
The situation has led to threats from Nigerian workers to shut down the national grid and telecommunications services if Ajaero is arrested.
