NAFDAC Declares Aba Market A Hub for Fake Beverages, Drinks Production

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has identified Eziukwu Market, commonly known as Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State, as a major center for the production and distribution of counterfeit and substandard drinks and beverages.

This revelation came during a recent operation led by Mr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of the South-East Zone.

During the operation, NAFDAC officials uncovered a disturbing array of fake products, including wines, whiskey, yogurt, carbonated drinks, chips, and dry gin.

These items were often found being produced in unsanitary conditions or stored with expired products that had been relabeled with new dates. "The situation is akin to weapons of mass destruction," Mr. Iluyomade remarked, highlighting the grave public health risks posed by these activities.

Despite previous crackdowns, including a significant operation in December 2023, illegal activities have persisted in the market. "It is baffling that individuals remain recalcitrant and determined to make money at the expense of the lives of their fellow citizens," Iluyomade stated.

He emphasized that the leadership of the market had previously signed an undertaking with NAFDAC to identify and expose those involved in the production and sale of fake goods. However, with ongoing violations, the agency plans to revisit this agreement, posing serious questions to market leaders.
