In response to the escalating violence during the #EndBadGovernance protests, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed aircraft in Gombe State.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, explained that the deployment was necessitated after the protests were hijacked by "unscrupulous elements," leading to widespread destruction of lives and property. This situation called for "extra security measures," including reconnaissance missions conducted by the aircraft.
The NAF's regiment forces collaborated with other security agencies to restore order. A statement by AVM Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information, highlighted the critical role played by the NAF 109 Combat Reconnaissance Group in quelling looting and theft during the unrest.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State commended the efforts of the NAF, acknowledging their important contribution to stabilizing the situation.
The protests, driven by chronic hunger, high unemployment, and a lack of government accountability, have been particularly intense in northern Nigeria.
President Tinubu's removal of subsidies has exacerbated the economic hardships, fueling public discontent. Despite the heavy police presence and curfews in cities like Kano and Abuja, the protests continued, reflecting deep-seated grievances against the administration.
Experts warn that the government's reliance on force to suppress protests could lead to further escalation and anarchy. Afolabi Adekaiyaoja, a research analyst at the Centre for Democracy and Development, criticized the government's approach, stating it shows a failure to address the root causes of the unrest.
