Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Yahaya Bello, the immediate past Governor of Kogi State.
Bello, who is facing 19-count charges related to alleged money laundering amounting to N80 billion, was released on bail set at N500 million.
The court's decision, delivered during the resumed trial on December 13, requires Bello to provide two sureties, each possessing property in Abuja and willing to swear an affidavit of means.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Bello pleaded not guilty when they were read to him.
The bail ruling has sparked widespread public outcry, with many Nigerians expressing dissatisfaction over what they perceive as lenient bail conditions given the scale of the alleged fraud.
Critics argue that such judicial decisions undermine efforts to combat corruption in the country.
One anonymous commentator lamented, "This country is a total joke! Someone siphoned money meant for the growth of his state and a shallow court now grants him bail of 500m instead."
