The House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) has disclosed that over 500 billion naira allocated to various educational institutions remains unclaimed.
This significant sum, intended to bolster Nigeria's tertiary education sector, has been left untouched due to various bureaucratic hurdles and stringent conditions.
Miriam Odinakachukwu Onuoha, the Chairperson of the Committee, highlighted this issue during a visit to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
She stated, "The committee discovered that the funds yet to be utilized were over 500 billion that had been allocated to beneficiary tertiary institutions."
The committee is actively working to relax some of these conditions to facilitate easier access to the funds.
Governor Otti expressed his commitment to reclaiming these funds for Abia State, emphasizing the urgent need to improve the state's educational infrastructure.
"We will do everything possible to reclaim funds belonging to Abia State which have not been assessed," he assured, noting that 20% of the state's 2024 budget is dedicated to education.
